The Science Behind Ageing Skin
Before we dive into the different types of treatments, here’s a little bit of science behind the ageing process - understanding this can help us appreciate the artistry of these treatments even more! As we age, the tone and textures of our skin change over time. From fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, age spots and loss of elasticity, both intrinsic (genetic) and extrinsic (environmental) factors influence this process.
INTRINSIC AGEING
Intrinsic ageing is primarily driven by the natural biological changes that occur with time. These include a reduction in collagen and elastin production, leading to decreased skin elasticity and firmness. Cell turnover also slows down, causing a thinner epidermis and a duller complexion.
EXTRINSIC AGEING
Extrinsic ageing, on the other hand, is largely attributed to external factors such as sun exposure, smoking, and environmental pollutants. UV radiation, in particular, accelerates skin ageing bybreaking down collagen and causing the formation of wrinkles and age spots.
Luckily, whilst none of us can escape the ageing process, there’s a lot of things we can do to drastically lessen the effects and slow it down.
