Why Vitamin D Is More Important Now Than Ever

We are currently being advised to stay inside our homes for the time being, with one form of exercise outside a day and in times like these, we need to make sure that we are doing the best we can to maintain and improve our health, not just for our body but also for our skin. This is one area that shows signs of stress very quickly.

Those of us with gardens and balconies should utilise these amenities and spend some time outside each day, whether that be just sitting outside or even doing some yoga! We have been advised to go for 1 form of exercise a day and we should take advantage of this where we can. The weather is warming up now and spring is here, the trees are blossoming. This is the perfect time to focus on your internal health and skin health.

Living in the Uk, we don’t get as much sunlight as we should and most of us will be getting considerably less than usual at the moment so its very important that we find other ways of getting Vitamin D.

Vitamin D helps to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in your body and these nutrients are needed to give you healthy skin, hair and bones. We get most of our Vitamin D from daily exposure to direct sunlight, but we also get it from the foods we eat and the supplements we take.

A vitamin D deficiency can lead to a variety of things such as muscle weakness, tiredness, fatigue and even depression. So not only does it affect the health of your body, your skin but also your brain.

What is Vitamin D and why is it important?

We know that Vitamin D is very important for a variety of bodily functions, but it is also very important for our skin. It is an antioxidant that helps to reduce damage from free- radicals and pollution, reduces oxidative stress and helps to combat lines, wrinkles and general ageing.

It helps to support the structure of our skin, promotes normal skin cell division and helps with skin repair. All skin types will benefit from Vitamin D, whether you get that via sunlight, food, topical treatments or supplements.

Which is better – Oral or Topical application?

In short, you really need to be treating the skin in both of these ways. Just applying a topical treatment is not enough, you also need to support your skin and body from the inside out.

Oral supplements are fantastic for maintaining your internal health while Topical treatments are applied directly to the skin and you get the benefit from these much quicker.
